the grammar question Activists say they wonder who will protect the rights of minors now in custody. Is this sentence right? Should I say "now is in custody"?

No, 'now in custody' is more correct, as a phrasal noun. However, you could also write "... rights of minors who are now in custody."

The sentence sounds perfect to me....'now is in custody' is definitely incorrect.
