I keep seeing y'a in informal language but Im not sure what it means and how/when to use it.

It's short for 'Il y'a', which means 'There is'. It's quite slangy, so you should probably avoid using it.

You should always write "Il y a" except maybe in a very informal writing style but when you speak it's common to say "ya" in place of "il y a" even in a formal talk.

"Swell" is a word that was popular many years ago, in the 1930s and 1940s and possibly even before that. To say someone is swell means he or she is a fine person.
