Can someone help me translate this? (Japanese-English)
I'm trying to practice my kanji through basic context (I'm using manga, books, etc.) and there's a sentence I can't figure out. Can someone please help me translate this to English? An explanation of the kanji would help. Thank you!
人間のつもりだった頃には感じ取れなかった。

When I was aware that I was a human I could not get the feelings.
人間 にんげん human
頃 ころ time
感 かん feel 感じるis a verb
取 と get 取る is also a verb
感じ取る is double verbs making one meaning like you can see in “help me out” using two words “help” and “out” instead of using only “help"

Translation: "I wasn't able to feel/sense it when I thought I was being a human."
My interpretation is that this person (or AI) is no longer a human being or gave up on trying to be a human being.
Now as Reiko-san said in the above, "感じ取る (kanji toru)" has two verbs attached together. "kanjiru" is to feel, "toru" is to take or get. This word "kanji toru" has a connotation of voluntary or sensitivity on being able to perceive things. "Sense" would be more appropriate translation, I believe, if it is for atmosphere or situations, while "feel" would be more appropriate for emotions or sensory.
Hope this will help!
