Plight can be used in conversation, but it is often used to describe a severe problem or issue that is ongoing or has happened in the past.
For example:
The plight of the poor is a problem that is deep and widespread. It won't be solved easily.
It can also be used to describe something very bad in the past:
The plight of the Jews in Nazi Germany was a tragic period in history.
Does that help?
