What’s the meaning of ‘Teja’? “At this place, Valladolid,” Jesús announced above the racket, “we view the scene of the last Mayan rebellion. One hundred years ago the Yucateca took our whole peninsula back from the ladinos. We declared independence from Mexico like your Tejas of North America, and nearly made it the nation of the Maya again.” What’s the meaning of ‘Teja’ in the phrase ‘Tejas of North America’? Thanks!

Lol.. "Texas" -- the state used to belong to Mexico, then became independent, then joined the USA.

Well, in that specific context I would say that is talking about Texas, the American State of Texas. However, the term 'teja' exists in Spanish and normally means a rustic roof made of clay and divided in several orange/red curved blocks. I hope this helps and please excuse my English!
