Do you mean "Hold on", and "wait"? You can use either one, but "hold on" is usually for a shorter amount of time.
Examples: "Hold on while I take the garbage outside", or "Please wait for your turn to talk", or "You must wait for five minutes"
Wait is often used with a time (but not always). Hold on - is almost a form of slang.
I hope that is helpful.
