Why do the words "let's book" may mean "let's go away"? Are there some historical reasons?

I think "Let's book" is used but most commonly I use/hear "Let's book it", which means "to get away in a hurry" or "to run away to escape". This is used more to refer to immediately leaving the current situation rather than an anticipated exit or trip. I think it was originally coined in the 1970's. Example: Jon: The police are coming! The police are coming Steve: Let's book it!
