In informal situations, 'the other day' is a vague, imprecise term equivalent to 'a day or two ago' or 'a few days ago'. For example, you might say 'I saw John in town the other day'. This might have been yesterday, the day before, or maybe two or three days ago.

It is similar to any word that describes a current time, used in sentences the same way as "today" (Example: "I went to the park today." ; "I went to the park the other day."). "The other day" describes any day before to the current day, without any specific mention of what day.
