Do you put in spaces between words in a Japanese sentence?

Short answer is no to your question. But you can use the 漢字(kanji) to determine where the words starts. It might take some time to know the beginning of each word, but it will be quite natural fast I believe as you can use both hiragana and kanji as good clues.
