“煎“可以再研究一下。 煎在现代食谱里面, 是把食物放在少量的热油里弄熟, 即英语的"fry",跟“stir fry"(炒)和"deep fry"(炸)不同。 在这首诗的语境里,煎应该是古义,“熬”的意思,英语大概是'boil"。举例, 煎药就是熬药。至于煮豆羹是否能用"decoct"呢,就得看你家食谱怎么说了。 什么是decoct? Decoct要"mash and boil", "mash" 就是“to reduce to a soft pulpy state by beating or pressure“, 著名的mashed potato土豆泥就是mash的一例。(Decoction reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decoction). "Decoction" is also a pharmacological method to extract oils, organic compounds and chemical substances. 现代的羹是糊状的,那就可能需要mash. 古代的羹呢? 谁知道呢? "Decoction" may be regarded as a subset of "boiling". In a poem, it is probably more graphic to use "boil" as it is a more frequently used and more generally understood word, particularly with its easily triggered connotation of "heat" (e.g. "It is boiling outside" meaning it is very hot), which is apt here. 我倾向于相信英语Poetry老师会建议用boil or even cook. 在英国上中小学有Poetry课(无论文科生理科生都要上)和家政课,不知道在中国有没有呢?

煎 literally means "fry". The original story likened brothers to beans from the same roots. "Frying" is an extension of the food metaphor. "相煎"的意思是"互相伤害"。 I found an excellent explanation, with historical background, on a Taiwan website. Here it is for you: "古文本是同根生,相煎何太急的最早出處為南朝宋劉義慶的《世說新語》[1]文學篇,描述當時的魏王曹丕想要殺掉自己的親弟弟曹植,找了一個機會藉故出個難題給曹植,命令他在七步內做一首詩,否則就要取他性命,結果曹植就吟出了這首《七步詩》:「煮豆持作羹,漉菽以為汁,萁在釜下然,豆在釜中泣,本自同根生,相煎何太急?」,曹丕聽了感到相當的慚愧,竟然差點殺了自己的親弟弟。

this is a history story. when the author of this poem:曹植, the brother of the king(曹丕). and what 曹丕 fear most is that his brother 曹植 will replace him. so 曹丕 decide to kill his brother. and 曹丕 uses a way that he ask his brother 曹植 to make a poem within seven steps. and 曹植 makes this poem. 相煎何太急 means that 曹植 was so sad that his brother want him dead soon. to some extent, 相煎 is a metaphor, which indicate that his brother is so ruthless to persecute him ignoring the relationship of brother and it can be understood like persecuting. and in ancient chinese poem, what you need is to understand the meaning of whole sentences, and it is hard to explain some of the words. this is chinese interpretation: 本来我们是同一条根上生长出来的,你为什么要这样紧紧逼迫呢

It means 'burn'. Bean stalks are burning under the cauldron. 豆在釜中泣。 泣:sob 中:inside; in; While the fruits are sobbing inside the cauldron. 本自同根生, 本:本来. 这里的“相”不是“相互”的意思,而是表示一方对另一方有所施为 [indicates how one party behaves towards the other]的意思。 曹丕是哥哥,曹植是弟弟,所以说是“同根生”,曹植把自己比作“釜中的豆”,而把曹丕比作”釜下燃烧的豆萁“,试问,那个”哭泣的豆“怎么”煎“釜下的”萁“呢?因此,并不是”相互煎“,只是单方面的”煎“,这里的煎就是”煮“的意思。 而”相“是有”单方面一方对一方实施行为的含义的,大家去查查字典吧。
