A "novel" is a long piece of fiction in book form--at least 50,000 words. It usually fills an entire volume, of perhaps 150 to 400 pages. A novel is a specific kind of story. A novel is always written.
A "story" is anything that is put into a coherent form, to be told from beginning to end, that makes sense and is interesting. It suggests something that is told aloud: "the boy scouts told scary stories around the campfire," but it can be written.
The word "story" by itself suggests fiction. But it can also be factual. A "newspaper story" is factual, but it is a story because the reporter has gone to the effort to write a story that is worth reading.
A "short story" is a specific kind of literary fiction, perhaps 3 to 20 pages long.
A "story" can be a joke that is only a few sentences long.
A "tale" is a close synonym of "story." "Story" is the common, ordinary word. "Tale" suggests either fiction, or a story with a core of truth that has been embellished to make it into a good story. Jack London combines the two words here:
"Of my tramp days is due much of my success as a story-writer. In order to get the food whereby I lived, I was compelled to tell tales that rang true. At the back door, out of inexorable necessity, is developed the convincingness and sincerity laid down by all authorities on the art of the short-story." The "tales" are the untrue, sad stories he told people so they would give him food. The skill he developed in telling those tales helped him later, in his literary career, to write short stories for magazines.
