How different is lifelong from lifetime?

These words are close, but there are differences in common usage. Lifetime is normally used as a noun. Although it can be used as an adjective, the most common is a noun. In every instance I can think of where lifetime would be an adjective, it sounds more natural to use lifelong in that case.
Both may be technically correct, but the situation I describe above sounds more natural.
