best self study textbook what is the best self study textbook for Japanese learners who are native english speakers? I bought Genki but don't like it that much to be honest.

I don't know what Genki focuses on, but here's a cool book that I've been using, its called Try!. There are 5 series of Try!; this book guides you based on JLPT levels N5-N1 and primarily prepares you for sentence structures (文法), reading comprehension, and listening. It also gives lots of examples and exercises for you to do :)

Forgot to note that I use a lot of online resources. Here are a list of some one the websites I have learn a lot from and tend to continue to return to. Erin.ne.jp ( This site takes you through different situations, teaching you new grammar and vocabulary with each one. It’s not the deepest of materials, but that’s not the point. I use this resource to use the things I’ve learned in different ways. Also, I use it to practice listening and speaking. ) JapanesePod101 on Youtube (JapanesePod101 has lots and lots of audio content. With every piece of audio there’s also a text script, vocabulary words, and other helpful features. You can find audio that’s at your level and up and practice along.) freejapaneselessons.com (This site has helped me greatly with grammar and was the first to introduce me to the writing systems. If I don't have my Genki books near me or with me, I look this site up on mobile or comp) I hope these help~

I also have the Genki series and in general I do like it. I think my opinion on it is more positive due to the fact that I have Japanese friends who help me with it when I find myself stuck. As well as tutors that will also use the book during our lesson since I own it. Other then the Genki series, I use Memrise. A online website (also app) that helps with memorization. They have many different ones to choose from and if you haven't tried it out yet, I recommend at least checking it out.
