it is a fiction that... Does "it" in the last sentence of the following context mean "generally all fictions" or "specifically the illusion talked about in the previous sentence"? His insistence is that the fruits of such an experience are nevertheless an illusion. But it is a ‘fiction [that] can make our lives worthwhile’.

Let me rephrase it for you. Even though , the fruits of such an experience IS an illusion as he insisted , it IS still a fiction that can make our lives worthwhile. "It" refers to what said earlier before the 'IS" ,which is " the fruits of the experience '
