What's the difference? I want to say, "Go to the left", when giving directions. However, I heard it said two different ways: 1. Vaya a la izquierda. 2. Vaya hacia la izquierda. What's the difference?

In terms of use, both are equivalent and commonly used. I'd recomend "hacia" if you are talking to a strange since it sounds a bit more polite. In general if you say. "Ir a..." next there will be a place or an action (infinive) Me gustaría ir a Venencia Quiero ir a comer If you say "Ir hacia" you're stating a direction (real or figurative) Prefiero ir hacia la derecha. Esos soldados van hacia la muerte.
