불구하고 In spite of
Hi!Could you explain me,how to right use "~데도"and"불구하고" with 이다/아니다?
i know that with nouns usually uses" 에도 불구하고",but then how about the past tense or negative form?
So since 이다 / 아니다 are verbs,can i do like this?:
noun+인데도/였는데도 불구하고...
noun+아닌데도/아니었는데도 불구하고....
Thank you!!!

Yes, you're right.
이다 and 아니다 are verbs, so you can use them with ~데도 (불구하고) as you indicated.
* Noun+에도 examples:
- 긴 전쟁에도 (불구하고) 사람들은 희망을 잃지 않았다: People have not given up hop despite the long war.
- 친구들의 전폭적인 지원에도 (불구하고) 그는 실페했다: He failed despite the full support from his friends.
* 이다/아니다 examples:
- 그는 부유한 집안 출신인데도 (불구하고) 검소하다: He is frugal despite his wealthy family background.
- 그는 부유한 집안 출신이 아닌데도 (불구하고) 사치스럽다: He revels in luxury despite his not too wealthy background.
- 그는 세계 기록 보유자였는데도 (...) 금메달을 놓쳤다: The world record holder, he still failed to get the gold medal.
- 그는 세계 기록 보유자가 아니었는데도 (...) 금메달을 땄다: Not the world record holder, he still garnered the gold medal.

Technically, 이다/아니다 are not verb. 아니다 is adjective and 이다 is particle(은/는/이/가/에게/을/를...those are particle). It is easier on you if you understand them as verb in English. Because verb and adjective can be predicate in Korean. + (There are lots of particle in Korean, but only) '이다' can be predicate. ex: 나는 한국사람이다. 나는 학생이다.
I just don't want you to be confused.
Lots of Korean grammar book explains like V/A-지만: in this case you can use Verb and Adjective),
V-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다. : in this case you can use only Verb.
