Heinous is usually used to describe an act or behavior. Hideous is usually used to describe the way something looks.
Murder is a heinous crime, and carries a stiff penalty for those who are convicted.
What was the designer thinking when he designed such a hideous dress?

Hideous means really ugly, disgusting or unsightly
Heinous is more like evil or wicked
