Hi Nick, This was a bit of a discussion point for my husband and me, because this is not a sentence we would use on a daily basis. But... what i think, and correct me if I am wrong, is that Jip did something bad, or said something bad.... in that case 'vader kijkt Jip eens aan' becomes like in English: Father gave Jip THE look. Or it could also mean, depending on context, 'father looked at Jip with amazement/ confusion. 'Eens' we would use more often in a commanding form. Kijk me eens aan. Doe je schoenen eens aan. Kom eens hier. I hope this helps, Pascale

"Iemand aankijken" simply means that you're looking at someone, nothing more and nothing less. :) It's completely neutral. It doesn't mean that you're glancing at someone, like Peachey suggested in the comment. "Vader kijkt Jip eens aan" simply means that the father is looking straight at Jip, giving him his full attention. This makes sense for instance when people are talking to each other without really looking at each other, because they are maybe doing other stuff, like eating, or browsing the newspaper. Like Pascale said in her example, "kijk me eens aan" can be used in a commanding way for instance when you ask someone to give you their full attention.

As Wanda explained, it means when we want someone's full attention. For example: Kijk me eens aan! I wil dat je naar me luistert! This means: Look at me! I want you to listen to me! This is imperative speech. You could also say: Look me in the eye! I want you to listen to me! Maybe this example is more clear for you.

Is it the separable verb? It's not "kijken" but "aankijken". So Father looks at Jip once. Perhaps "glances" is a more accurate word, but I'll leave that up to native speakers to confirm.
