Very little difference. Only very subtle mood/context difference. 'Located between' is more formal. 'Located between' might be used by the speaker to give a more precise mood/style to the sentence. Talking casually with a foreign friend - the Irish sea is between. Making a business presentation to foreign clients - the Irish sea is located between. Both work fine. Nobody would really notice.
