Yes , Passive voice is used formally in many ways (news , shows or speeches ) and also in dialects but to less degree . 
أُعلن منذ قليل عن وفاة الكاتب المشهور ( It has been just announced the death of the famous author 
هل سمعت ما قِيل عن صديقك ؟ ( Have you heard what's said about your friend ? ) 
تُوفى اليوم رئيسى فى العمل . ( Today , My boss just passed away )
