Could you tell me if I misunderstood this sentenc??
The sentence goes like this: he perceived that if he was patient and could represent the best of his race, his merits would be recognized.
My problem is: does "the best of his race" mean "the best part of him"? Because there is not any competition or game in this article.
Thanks for spending your time answering my question.

Race: a group, especially of people, with particular similar physical characteristics, who are considered as belonging to the same type, or the fact of belonging to such a group:
could represent the best of his race----> could stand for the best of his people, could be a role model of his people, could set a good pattern for his people.

Hi, "the best of his race" does not mean "the best part of him"?
More specifically, "the best of his race" would actually mean representing "the best of his nation" or "the best of his people"
Race= people, nation ; and does not refer to a single individual.
