Professionele leerkrachtWhat does "coast" mean in this sentence?
I came accross with this weird meaning of the noun "coast" reading the following news on "The Economist": "All is not as dreamy as Angela Merkel’s coast to victory makes it seem".
It seems like a synonym for search or pursuit. How would be possible to paraphrase this title?
Thanks for your help!

Coasting here refers to an easy path to success or victory, meeting little resistance. Merkel is expected to win re-election without much difficulty. The headline could be paraphrased many ways. One possibility is this: Merkel may win the vote by a wide margin, but governing will remain a tough challenge.

Rob said it perfectly. A restated title would be, "All is not as dreamy as Angela Merkel’s glide to victory makes it seem."

To coast is to glide. Like on a bicycle when you are going downhill without pedalling.

Hello Jane,
The meaning of 'coast' here would be similar to 'path/journey' so in the context of this sentence 'Angela Merkel's path to victory.' The connotation here is that victory will be easy for her.
I hope that helps,
Christine
