I have gotten is used in America. I live in England and no one says I have gotten. We say I have got.

I think the main difference is that 'gotten' is used in American English but not in British English.

As the previous two answers have pointed out, gotten only appears in American English. Got and gotten are used as follows: I have got means that you are in possession of something. "I have got two dogs" is the same as I have two dogs. I have gotten means that you've obtained something. "I have gotten two dogs from the dog pound" means I went to the dog pound and obtained 2 dogs.
