Yes, we use the word 'backpackers'. It is not a synonym of traveller - it is a certain kind of traveller.
It describes usually a young person often travelling on a budget. The word mainly refers to their big backpacks. As they are travelling on a budget, they don't travel with a lot of things and only take what is essential and fits in their backpack.
You can use it with the verb, 'go'. The collocation 'go backpacking' describes the action of travelling like this.
For example: I went backpacking around South America during my gap year between school and university.
