Well, it's hard to describe how we show politeness. There can be many ways, both language-related and in terms of behavior. I know in many asian countries, you show respect by bowing, one way or another. In Italy, we don't have that kind of custom, but we do have a polite register that we usually use with people we don't know or that we know but we have/want to show respect to, such as teachers, your friends' parents, your children's friends' parents (until both parties decide you can drop the polite register and you start using a more informal one), and so on. It's called "dare del Lei", which is like "Vous" in French and "Sie" in German. Speaking of other customs, you give your seat to elder people and pregnant women when on a public transport, waiting that everyone is ready to eat when at the restaurant and so on. I think, though, that this is just good manners. What about China?

People may not want to answer the question for a couple reasons. First, it is not just about language. Second, there is no context. Politeness is displayed different ways depending on the situation, so a proper answer would take a lot of work. I suggest you describe the situation

The magic words 'please' and 'thank you' will get you a long way in the UK as will the equivalents in many other countries. We don't have a higher form of 'you' as other languages do but if you are talking to someone you don't know, it is common to add polite utterances in from of the question/request - sometimes called indirect speech. Instead of "Open the window." which sounds quite rude you could say "Please open the window." which is more polite but still sounds like and order. Or to make it really polite. you would say something like - "Would you mind opening the window please.' Hope this helps Bob
