He had a lot going for him, means he had a lot of skills or benefits, such as wealthy parents, lots of money, handsome, fit, mentally skillful. It does not mean "he had a thing for him". Sorry Carlos, you are just wrong on this point. Both are fine.

One way is: He had a thing for him. And your second question, both matters is fine.
