A diferença é bem sutil.
Sabonete é utilizado no banho para lavar o próprio corpo e sabão é utilizado para lavar panelas e outros objetos.
Sabonete: you use it in the bathroom to take a shower.
Sabão: you use it to wash things like pan.
You can use sabão to take a bath too, but you never would use sabonete to wash things .

Sabonete is a kind of sabão used only to take bath, sabão is all the other kinds, sabão em pó, sabão em barra, sabão de coco, sabão caseiro
