a strand of hair?
a strand of hair means a single hair or a wisp of hair? it seems 'three strand braid' doesn't mean three single hairs are woven together. I'm a little puzzled.
what do you call this in the picture?

You could use lock or strand. Wisp would be more poetic.
I can see how "strand" could be confusing because it can be used for either a single hair (i.e: "one strand of hair is out of place") or a bunch of hair that is all moving in the same direction, like in the picture or like the three strands in a braid.
