What does "tie the loose ends" mean in the news title ?? Hello I'm almost new here~ and needing some help :D I saw this online news when I was searching for a phrase: "tie the loose ends" and its usage, I think it means to get something done, right? Then what does this phrase indicate in the title : "Tying loose ends? Gravitational waves could solve string theory, study claims" ? Does it mean the string theory is going to solve most the scientific problem of string theory?? I don't know whether this link will work or not, but it is reference.. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/jul/05/gravitational-waves-string-theory Thanks!

To "tie up loose ends" in this context means that someone believes that gravitational waves could finally complete (the often argued about) string theory. I think the phrase may be related to weaving. Once a cloth has been woven on a loom, the weaver must tie off the loose ends so that the cloth would not unravel.
