Yes, it is common in the United States, but I usually say “dribs and drabs.” Examples: “At first, registrations for the event were only coming in dribs and drabs. But this last week, we got a flood of registrations all at once.” “The government has been sharing information only in dribs and drabs. There are still a whole lot of unknowns about the situation.”

I personally have never seen or used this expression before, but it appears that the correct form of it is actually "dribs and drabs." It means "in small, scattered amounts."
