Hello! I think you are combining two english idioms
1. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. This phrase says that you should not turn against (or "bite" in the idiom) people who look out for you or help you.
2. Dont take the bait. When someone "takes the bait" they are tricked into something. If a fish goes for the bait, they will be caught by the fisherman. It is similar here.

"Don't bite the bait" or "Don't take the the bait" means to not accept an obvious lure, just as a fisher tries to a catch a fish. The "bait" in this case is, perhaps, an offhanded comment or gossip.
