It was we who... OR It was us who...?
I am told that people normally tend to say ''It was us who...'' in everyday conversations. Can I use the same expression when writing an informal essay ? Or should I stick on grammatical accuracy and choose ''we'' instead of ''us''?

Like Emily says, one way is correct, but the other way is more natural. If you want to be safe, you can say “We were the ones who…” — that is grammatically correct, and doesn’t sound weird.

It was we who... It was I who... sound exaggeratedly formal.
It was us who... It was me who... are the most common and informal.
Both are correct.
