Hi James, not a proper noun but just a common noun. A proper noun is used for a distinct, unique, entity, e.g a named building like The Houses of Parliament, or a person, a city, a particular planet etc.
If you had a superhero called 'The Banana' for example then that name would be a proper noun. Otherwise a banana is just a banana.
