There IS a few things... is it correct? In a Ted Talk "Try something new for 30 days" the guy says "There's a few things that I learned while doing these challenges". As far as I know, *there is* is used for singular and *there are* for plural. So, could anyone please tell me whether it is a mistake or just another possible usage?

Technically it is incorrect, so you wouldn't see it in a written document. But it is common in casual speech. "There's a few apples left in the bin." but never "There is a few apples left in the bin."
