Usually, we start with a greeting, and then ask how they are. Here are some examples:
Greetings-
Very polite (not commonly used): "Hello"
Polite, common: "Hi"
Very casual, not for formal situations: "Hey"
Slang, very informal, mostly used by teens: "Yo"
Time of Day Greetings: "Good Morning" for early morning- 12 PM, "Good Afternoon" for 12 PM- About 5PM
*often, a greeting is followed by a name, for example "Hi, Sophia!" or "Good morning, Josh!"
Questions-
Polite, common: "How are you?"
Very casual, not for formal situations: "How's it going?"
Slang, very informal: "What's up?"
Other: "How was you weekend?", "How was (insert event)"
An example of a conversation is like this:
Sam: Hi Josh! How are you?
Josh: I'm good, thanks. How about you?
Sam: I'm doing well.

"Hi" or "hey" is common where I am from. "Hello" is not as common. When meeting for the first time, I usually say "Hi, I'm Jason." Sometimes, after exchanging names, I'll say "Nice to meet you."
When greeting a friend or co-worker I already know, it's a bit different. Where I'm from, we typically ask how things are going. I'll use your name as an example. Here is a typical morning exchange at work:
Me: "Hey, Bob."
Co-worker: "Hey, Jason, how's it going?"
Me: "It's going alright, how are you?"
Co-worker: "Not too bad."
Sometimes, if my mood or the mood of my co-worker is worth mentioning, we will mention it, but that is the basic exchange.

I say "hello." I say "hi" when I am being casual, cheerful, and talking to someone I know fairly well. Greetings are mostly a friendly ritual. There isn't any need to be unusual or creative.
