What's the difference between 기억하나요? vs 기억나요? Alternatively, what's the best way to say "Do you remember?" in polite speech?

1. 기억하다 means' to remember something' and 기억나다 means 'to have a sudden flash of memory'. They have slightly different meanings. 기억 (memory) + 하다 (to do) : 기억하다 (to remember) 기억 (memory) + 나다 ( something comes out ) : 기억나다 (to have a sudden flash of memory) 2. verb stem + -나요 + ? verb stem + -아/어요 + ? * 기억하|다 --> 기억하 + -나요 --> 기억하나요 기억하|다 --> 기억하 + -아요 --> 기억해요( irregular verb) ** Both form has the same meaning and they both are used in informal polite form. However, -나요 gives softer(feminine) feeling to listeners. cf) 기억나요 is from 기억나다. 기억나|다 ---> 기억나 + -요 (polite ending form) --> 기억나요 * 기억나요 has a different basic verb form from 기억하나요. '기억나요' is a simple polite ending form of '기억나다'. Hope it helps and please follow me at koreanclass.canada on Instagram!

기억 나다 means the "memory happens" (literally). 기억하다 means "remember". It is important to remember this difference, because when negated, it uses different particles. So "I can't remember" becomes eother 기억 안 나다 (literally: "memory doesn't happen"), or 기억 못 하다.
