What does "you are covering me" in this context mean?
This is from the book, Hatchet, and a boy named Brian is in the cockpit on his own, trying to ask for help on the radio.
He reached to his belt and released the switch. Then, through the noise and static he heard a voice.
"Whoever is calling on this radio net, I repeat, release your mike switch-**you are covering me**. Over."
It stopped and Brian hit his mike switch. "I hear you! This is me...!"
"Roger. I have you now. Please state your difficulty and location. And say over to signal the end of transmission. Over."
I don't really understand what "cover" means here.

Until Brian released his mic switch, he was covering the other person. Meaning, the other person couldn't talk as only one person could talk at a time.
