We say "make dinner," "cook dinner," or "prepare dinner."
For example, last night I made dinner. I put steaks on a broiling pan and put the in the oven, and I put string beans in the microwave.
"Do" has one odd, informal, colloquial use. As far as I know, it is only used together with the word "lunch." To "do lunch" means "to meet with someone, in a restaurant, and eat lunch together."
