Not exactly an answer to the question as asked, but I would like to suggest you give the Pimsleur German audio course a try. I used the Pimsleur method to gain a modest amount of proficiency in Portuguese, and my son used it to the same effect for Chinese. It's expensive, but there are subscriptions, or, (best way) get or order it through your local library for free. The Michel Thomas method I find is also a good audio path.
Now, the above is CONTROVERSIAL and will invite passionate responses from those both for and against, but I have found it works and works QUICKLY.
If it really is a book you want, the "For Dummies" series does a good job of balancing grammar and usefulness. There are many others. When I was learning German many years ago, I had a combination of the 500 Verbs book, a concise grammer and several others (including a book of naughty slang), along with my college courses. Wish I'd had Pimsleur then...

Teach Yourself German is a good book. But every learner is different, so you might get different suggestions. 'Teach Yourself' is a series for many different languages.
