I can offer other similar uses of "getting." We are getting involved in our local government. I am getting disgusted with his poor attendance. She is getting sunburned. I hope this helps.

It is sort of a slang way to say "I am almost beginning..." Maybe your friend tells you he is painting his house. You ask him "How does it look?" He could say: "Well, I am just getting started, so I don't know yet." We also say "I am just getting finished." Meaning, "I am almost done." For example, Maybe you got to the place where your friend works, to meet him for coffee, and when you arrive he might say to you: "Give me five minutes, I am just getting finished."

"To get started" is a verb phrase in English. "Started" functions as the past participle in this instance. A past participle is a form of a verb usually ending in "ed" in English, and has many different functions in sentences depending on context. A past participle can function as an adjective (ex: Sliced bread), but in other instances like this one it is the past participle of a verb that forms many compound tenses (Ex: I have forgotten; I had stopped going, I should have marked the calendar, I will have started next week). In this instance, I am just getting started is a compound tense, expressing an action that is happening in the present and continuing in the future. Other examples of using the past participle in the perfect progressive tense are things like: "I am getting tired of this game.." "I am getting used to" "I just happened up this new restaurant" I hope this has helped!
