How to differ "Wolf" and "God" in Japanese (they're both [kami])?

I believe that 'wolf' is actually 'ookami', not just 'kami'. But then again, 'paper' is also pronounced 'kami', as well as 'hair' - the difference is the kanji they're written with. In spoken language, I suppose you just have to know from the context which the speaker is talking about. Japanese has a lot of these kind of words...
