Person is singular.
Persons is plural.
People can be both singular and plural.
"People" and "person" have the same meaning - a human being.
However in some cases they are not interchangeable.
For example:
There are a lot of people in the Museum. (correct)
There are a lot of person in the Museum. (incorrect)
In my opinion, "people" refer to human other than ourselves. "Person" refer to human including ourselves.
For instance:
1. I am a bad person. (correct)
2.I am a bad people. (I won't say it is wrong, but it is not so nice.)
