the main difference here is stylistic!
In my opinion, to a person from England both are fine, the second one is even smarter, more formal
And to an American "before I have left Japan" will maybe sound like u're showing off )))

There is a difference grammatically, but if you said it to someone who was fluent in English, they would understand both as the same. Hope that helps!
