Chinese pinyin and the appearance of Chinese characters are very different things. If a person's reading is very good, that doen't mean their speaking ability is very good. Likewise, if a learner has good spoken Chinese, that doesn't necessarily mean they know characters. Because of this, I think Chinese is more difficult than English.

Jason said what I want to say.
Imagine a person focus on Pinyin and he doesn't know a character of Chinese. He can talk with people very well, since there isn't any character involved. For example, if he says “Zhōngwén de pīnyīn hé zìxíng xiāngchà hěnduō” to me, I can fully understand. It's not necessary that he has to know characters.
Then try to imagine another person knowes characters very well and is absolutely ignorant of Pinyin. He can read a lot of material and write while he can't speak any Chinese. If he sees "中文的拼音和字形相差很多", he can understand without knowing their Pinyins.

there are quite differences between chinese pinyin and chinese characters.
If the person knows how to read, it doesn't neccesary mean he's good for oral.
likewise, the person who has got abilities in speaking may not know how to read: for this reasons that make chinese harder then english.

Chinese pinyin and characters are two very different things. Good reading skills doesnt lead to a great oral speaking technique also, likewise, which a good chinese speaker doesnt mean that he is a good writer as well, so i think that learning chinese is more difficult than learning english.

There maybe no close relationship between Chinese Pinyin and characters. You maybe not good at speaking even if you do well in reading . And those who are good at speaking Chinese probably weak in reading . So in my opinion , Chinese is harder than English
