"Once upon a time" is like "Very very old days". The word used on fairy tales. In Japanese, "Mukashi mukashi" 昔々(In Kanji), むかしむかし(In Hiragana).

once upon a time は、日本のおとぎ話の初めのきまり文句で、"昔々(むかしむかし)”といいます。    ”ずいぶん前に”と言う場合もあります。
