Hi everyone.
In the song "the rose" by Bette Midler I found the expression "take the chance". So I would like its meaning, but I'm in doubt whether it means "take the opportunity" or "run the risk".
Here is the context:
"It's the heart, afraid of breaking that never learns to dance.
It's the dream, afraid of waking that never takes the chance."

In context, my first thought was "opportunity", but on further reflection, I'd have to say that both meanings are suggested simultaneously.

Your second guess is on the right track. The line refers to being so afraid of the risk of a broken heart from a failed romance that you're too scared to open yourself up to beginning a romantic relationship.
