If you are living in China or studying Chinese language, you probably have heard of the word “Niu Bi”. It could be an adjective or a noun. The meaning of it is “super cool, good, competent, strong, smart…” when it’s an adjective, while this word means cow’s vagina when it’s a noun. Many foreigners may get astonished because of the two utterly unrelated meanings. Today I will tell you the history of this word. There is a river called the yellow river in China, which is famous for its rushing water. Many years ago, it was not easy to cross it to those who lived along the banks of it. To solve this problem, people invented a raft made by leather of pigs or sheep—it could float on the surface and people didn’t need to worry about capsizing, but they didn’t have rubber yet at that time. People had to blow it up by mouth every time before they went across the river. It was a really tough job. Even a strong lad had to spend a long time to blow the whole raft up that was made by pig or sheep bags, not to mention the raft made by cow’s leather, so if someone said he could finish blowing the cow leather raft in one breath, he was definitely bragging. So blowing leather “Chui Niu Pi” of cow became the synonym of boasting. In Chinese, “Chui”=blow, “Niu”=cow, “Pi”=leather. Then, this phrase simplified from “Chui Niu Pi” to “Chui Niu” or even a single “Chui”. The “chui” became a verb alike “speak” or “talk”, you can put the content of bragging after it. Since most people boast of something that are very cool, good… or himself that is very strong, smart… the “Niu Pi” developed a meaning of “super cool, good…”. In English, some word like “spot” “explosion” has the “P” sounds like “B”. The “Niu Pi” became “Niu Bi” in a same way. It happens that “Bi” is a rude word of vagina, so the “niu bi” gets two implications—“very cool”or“cow’s vagina”.
