"When poverty comes in at doors, love leaps out at windows". This is a proverb. Do you think it's revealing an ordinary and common fact?

In more colloquial English I would put it "When poverty walks through the door, love leaps out the window." I think it's a very cynical and amusing statement. I suspect whoever first said it was disappointed in love, and didn't realize how lucky they were.
