Malay is not only language, it also has its own history and culture. On the one hand, the Malay language has some Arabic and Persian roots. On the other hand, the food culture is a combination of Indian and Chinese cuisine.
5 years ago I went on holiday to Malaysia, to the two big cities, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. It would be great to be able to improve my Malay as it got rusty after a few years.
That's why I want to share one of my teachers, Kai Aoel. For me, the Malay lesson is my 15th lesson here on italki. The number 15 became a magical number, because of italki's 15th anniversary.
Kai talked about interesting things in Malay and some words that I didn't understand, she explained them in Mandarin Chinese. During the class I laughed a few times because of her Chinese/Malaysian jokes. She has a sense of humor that caught my attention. I think that is an effective way to learn a foreign language.
