Why is “appropriate to” used in the sentence “Punishment should be appropriate to the crime” and not “appropriate for”?

Типа как "соответствовать преступлению" - его тяжести , а не "соответственно за преступление" - ответственность в целом. 🧑⚖️

It refers to proportionality rather than suitability. The phrase 'punishment should be appropriate to the crime' means that the punishment must be proportionate to the crime—in other words, the severity of the punishment should match the seriousness of the offence.
When we use 'appropriate for,' however, we’re talking about suitability. For example: 'The movie is not appropriate for children.'

Because it's a mix of "appropriate for" and "proportionate to".
